‘Remain’: Everything We Know About Jake Gyllenhaal’s Supernatural Romance
Nicholas Sparks has taken on supernatural romance in his latest novel, Remain. A little over a year after it hit shelves, the latest Sparks book will follow in the footsteps of The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, and more by making its way to the big screen, with leads Tate and Wren being played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Bridgerton‘s Phoebe Dynevor.
The paranormal premise isn’t the only thing that makes this movie unique. Director M. Night Shyamalan wrote the screenplay at the same time Sparks was writing the novel, working together to produce both versions of the story. After watching the new teaser trailer, scroll to get all the details on the plot, cast, and more.
When will Remain be released?
After originally being slated for an October 23 release — almost exactly a year after the book came out — Remain will roll into theaters on February 5, 2027. Talk about a Valentine’s Day treat!
Who is in the Remain cast?
In addition to Gyllenhaal and Dynevor, the cast includes Ashley Walters (Adolescence) as Oscar, Julie Hagerty (Airplane) as Louise, Jay O. Sanders as Reece, and Tracy Ifeachor (The Pitt) as Theresa. Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia also appear.

What is Remain about?
Architect Tate arrives in Cape Cod with a complicated past, per the book’s synopsis. Tate, who was discharged recently from a psychiatric facility for depression, is reeling from the loss of his beloved sister, Sylvia. Before she died, Sylvia told Tate that she could see spirits, a gift that runs in the family. The skeptic Tate is grappling with that when he meets Wren, who challenges everything he thought he knew.
“The theme of the novel is how sometimes only love can save a person,” Sparks told Swooon. “I tend to believe that because I am one of these people who thinks all the good stuff in life comes from love: love of your parents, love of your siblings, your romantic partner, your pet, your job, your city, your town, your country, whatever. Real love, genuine, kind, giving, and forgiving love, it’s where all the good stuff comes from.”
If you’ve already read the novel, don’t expect the movie to have an identical plot. “I’m not going to tell you if they end exactly the same. We’re both known for twists. But let me tell you this, Night and I did have discussions: Do we want the novel to end the same as the film or not?”
Is there a Remain trailer?
There’s no full-length trailer yet, but you can see Tate and Wren’s idyllic romance take a creepy turn in the teaser trailer at the top of the page.
