  • Harry Richardson explains how Larry feels in the aftermath.
  • He reveals whether Larry still wants to marry her, despite their unresolved trust issues and broken engagement.

Many Gilded Age fans are buzzing about Marian’s (Louisa Jacobson) panicked reaction to having pre-marital sex with Larry (Harry Richardson) in the Season 4 premiere, whether they’re coming to her defense or criticizing her. However, she isn’t the only one in the situation filled with instant regret.

While Jacobson told TV Insider that Marian is grappling with the “tight constraints that are placed upon her as a woman” in society after her night with Larry, Richardson added that Larry doesn’t just regret his role in Marian’s reaction.

“There’s also the very real realization that he might have just ruined his future of being married to her,” he explained of the aftermath of their Episode 1 actions. “I think because he has done it in the wrong order, so to speak, and he does really want to marry her, and they have gone back and forth with both of them having trust issues… and then he lets his impulse get the better of him.”

It’s clear in the Season 4 premiere that Larry still has feelings for Marian, despite his hesitation to take her back in the Season 3 finale after she broke off their engagement a few episodes earlier. They both aren’t confident they can fully trust each other and put off figuring out their relationship. Marian claims she’s moved on from Larry before they sleep together.

Though Larry doesn’t say it before Marian flees — or out loud at any point in the Season 4 premiere — he still wants to spend his life with Marian, according to Richardson. “He also then realizes that not only has he now hurt someone who he cares about so much, but he’s possibly lost her forever,” the actor said. “That brings along a huge weight and humbling and fear for him as well, which we see him grapple with through the season.”
