‘Prep’: Everything We Know About the YA Adaptation Headed to Netflix

'Prep' by Curtis Sittenfeld

On the heels of My Life with the Walter Boys, Finding Her Edge, and more YA adaptations, Netflix is adding another popular title to its slate: Prep. Deadline reported that it’s given a straight-to-series order for a show based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s bestselling 2005 novel.

Prep is a coming-of-age story set at a prestigious New England boarding school, centered around scholarship student Lee Fiora as she navigates friendships and crushes amongst her privileged classmates. Netflix has already put a major romance adaptation name behind it: Netflix’s One Day EP and writer Nicole Taylor.

What is Prep about?

Prep chronicles Lee’s high school years at Massachusetts boarding school Ault. She’s 14 when she leaves her family behind in South Bend, Indiana. Lee is both intimidated and fascinated by her uber-wealthy, jaded classmates. She’s integrated herself among them by her senior year, only for everything to come crashing down when her behavior takes a self-destructive turn. On the romance side, Lee is infatuated with a classmate who is somewhere between a crush and a boyfriend.

Who is in the Prep cast?

Nicole Taylor is Prep‘s writer and showrunner, executive producing with Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions, and Sittenfeld.

“After 22 years and quite a few false starts…Prep is really for real being made as a TV show! By @netflix! And by the showrunner Nicole Taylor, whose scripts are SO unbelievably good, and the super-smart executive producer, Alix Taylor, who first read Prep as a middle schooler,” Sittenfeld wrote on Instagram.

She added. “Other producers include me…and Will Ferrell (yes, really, we’ve never met, but I did laugh so hard I cried while rewatching Blades of Glory on a plane recently).”

What is Prep‘s premiere date?

The show was announced on November 3, with Netflix revealing on the same day that a writers’ room was slated to open in January 2026. The show will consist of half-hour episodes.

“Prep is my all time favorite novel and I have longed to adapt it for the entire twenty years since I first read it and found myself reflected uncannily back,” Nicole Taylor said, per Deadline. “There is no more acute depiction of the introspective, bookish self-conscious adolescent girl and no more truthful or excoriating take on the perils of social mobility than in Curtis Sittenfeld’s beautiful first novel. I am overjoyed to be adapting for Netflix.”

The “false start” Sittenfeld referenced on Instagram was when HBO tried adapting it as a comedy series in 2016, only for it not to move forward. Deadline confirmed Netflix won’t be taking a comedic approach to its adaptation.

“I’m overjoyed that Netflix is making Prep as a TV show — the 22-year wait was worth it!,” Sittenfeld said, according to Deadline. “Alix Taylor at Gloria Sanchez has guided the project forward with such intelligence and enthusiasm, and Nicole Taylor’s scripts are truly brilliant. Nicole’s adaptation makes me understand my own novel, and myself, better. My 51-year-old self can’t wait to see what they do with this story of privilege, longing, and teen angst.”
