What To Know

  • Noah Wyle revealed he had a crush on his ER costar Sherry Stringfield.
  • Wyle joined ER in his early twenties.
  • Wyle has been married to Sara Wells since 2014.

It seems like life imitated art, albeit briefly in both cases. Noah Wyle, who played Dr. John Carter on ER, had a crush on Dr. Susan Lewis actress Sherry Stringfield while filming the long-running series.

On the October 27 episode of the Good Hang With Amy Poehler podcast, the newly-appointed People’s Sexiest Man Alive reflected on the 15-season medical drama with Poehler. The comedian pointed out that she didn’t realize how young Wyle was when he was on the show, which aired from 1994 to 2009.

“I turned 22 while we made the pilot, so I was 21 when I was auditioning for it, which is my daughter’s age, which is crazy,” Wyle reflected.

Poehler noted that that period of just stepping into adulthood was a “tender” age, but Wyle countered that he had the support of older castmates. “I had big brothers on that one though. I had George [Clooney], Tony [Anthony Edwards], and Eriq [La Salle], who were all 10 years older than me, who had already been down those roads before,” he explained.

“And I had a huge crush on Sherry,” Wyle added. “So it felt very comfortable to be part of that ensemble.”

“I didn’t know that,” said Poehler, having a bit of a fangirl moment. Earlier in the interview, she admitted she’d watched the series in full three times. “Everybody had a crush on Sherry,” Wyle responded.

During the episode, Wyle also recalled going into his ER audition after a “rather tumultuous breakup.” He explained, “My first big love had broken my heart, and I was trying to rebuild my life, and I was sort of looking for clues, and I’d gone back into therapy, and I was reading The Celestine Prophecy, do you remember that book?”

He continued, “And so I was super into this idea of controlled dramas and recognizing what someone’s trying to do you and being neutral and all that s**t.  And so I remember sitting in the hallway thinking about not letting the other actors that were auditioning around me’s energies affect me.”

Wyle went on to find love again with longtime wife Sara Wells, whom he married in 2014. They met and started dating three years earlier, and welcomed a daughter in 2015. Wyle was married once before, to makeup artist Tracy Warbin, from 2000 to 2010. They share two children.
