Noah goes all out for his proposal to Joanne (Kristen Bell) in Nobody Wants This Season 3, but actor Adam Brody‘s real-life one to his wife, Leighton Meester, was a more low-key affair. In fact, the The O.C. alum thinks the Gossip Girl actress “deserved a little more.”
Brody rarely shares details about his engagement and wedding to Meester, which took place in November 2013 and February 2014, respectively. However, he opened up about his proposal experience during an October 26 appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast alongside his Nobody Wants This castmates.
“I’ll spare the details. However, rest assured it was not as romantic as it should have been,” the 46-year-old recalled. “The only thing romantic about it was the speed. Meaning, like, I proposed pretty quickly into our relationship. We got married fast. But other than that, it was very pedestrian.”
Brody and Meester, who welcomed daughter Arlo in 2015 and a son in September 2020, went public with their romance in 2013. They met around the time The O.C. was ending and Gossip Girl was beginning in 2007, Brody explained during a 2021 episode of the Unqualified podcast. They went on to costar in the 2011 film The Oranges, but didn’t get together until about a year and a half later. Brody revealed he was “smitten instantly” on the Podcrushed podcast.

On Armchair Expert, Nobody Wants This star Timothy Simons pointed out that Brody, who told Shepard he’s “certainly” allergic to pageantry, is pragmatic. Simons explained, “I can see that from you being like, ‘Yeah, we love each other. Like, let’s just get married. Why are we going to do all this bulls**t? You know what I mean? Like, let’s just do it. Let’s just f***ing do the thing.”
Brody admitted, “There’s that, and yet, and yet I do kick myself a little. She deserved a little more.”
The actor would do the proposal differently today. “I’ve learned the thing is, at the time, you’re like, ‘Whatever,’ but you’re going to tell the story the rest of your life,” he said. “So my advice is do it, not even just for the moment, but for the story that you’re going to tell forever.”
