‘Fourth Wing’: Idris Elba Responds to Casting Speculation in TV Adaptation
What To Know
- Idris Elba responded with a cryptic comment to fans hoping for his casting in Fourth Wing.
- Fans hope Elba voices the dragon Tairn in Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ novel.
- Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya have been cast as leads Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson.
The Fourth Wing TV adaptation has already found its Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson in Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya, but that hasn’t stopped fans of Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy novel from speculating who will play the rest of the Basgiath War College crew — including her dragons.
Just a day after Deadline reported that McGregor and Sakraya landed the lead roles, actor Idris Elba responded to a fan’s “call to arms” for him to lend his voice to Violet’s grumpy dragon, Tairn.
In Fourth Wing, Tairn enters the fold on Threshing Day, a ritual for first-year cadets in the Riders Quadrant. Either they connect with an unbonded dragon, or they die in the attempt. Tairn doesn’t plan to choose a rider, but Violet impresses him by protecting Andarna, a young dragon Violet also bonds with. Tairn, who is deeply unimpressed by humans, is one of the largest and deadliest dragons of the bunch.
Many readers have long thought the timbre of Elba’s voice would match the one Violet hears in her head. “Did Emilio get this part on own violation and talent, probably, but also mainly because I think that we all collectively manifested it,” @bookbitsclub explained their reasoning in an Instagram video. “So now, I need us to shift our powers over to manifesting Idris Elba for Tairn immediately.”
Elba simply reacted with the eyes emoji, which earned thousands of likes from users. Whether it means he’s manifesting his casting, too, or he’s teasing it remains a mystery. “IDRIS PLEASE DONT START I CANNOT HANDLE ANOTHER FANCAST OF MINE COMING TRUE RIGHT NOW,” one comment read.

The creator of the post added, “@outlier_society @michaelbjordan can you translate [the eyes emoji],” addressing the producer of the Prime Video adaptation.
“Please!!!!” another user pleaded. “Do this for us book girlies!!! Your voice is literally what I imagined when reading!!!!”
Is Elba’s voice what you envisioned when reading the snarky, curmudgeonly dragon’s lines in the book, or is there another actor you think would fit the part? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
