Hold on Tight for Netflix’s Sapphic Teen Drama ‘The Body’: See the Trailer & More
Netflix’s newest teen drama sends us all the way back to the early 2000s, when a Catholic dance-team initiation gone wrong leads a group of girls to wonder whether they accidentally sold their newbie’s soul to the Devil.
According to director and writer Quinn Shephard (Blame, Not Okay), this sapphic thriller was written “satirizing some of the trauma of growing up queer, and repressed, and the confusion around that.” Now, the trailer for her upcoming series, The Body, is here, teasing Crucible-style mass hysteria.
On August 11, Netflix revealed its first look photos and premiere date for The Body, which Shephard calls her “most personal” work yet. With familiar faces like Bachelor Nation’s Gabby Windey, Cale Ambrozic from Finding Her Edge, and Sofia Wylie of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series fame, this spooky new series has us on the edge of our seats. After all, Shephard describes it as raunchy, which screams romance to us.
Scroll to find out everything we know about The Body so far, including who’s been cast, when the series will premiere, and more.
What is Netflix’s The Body about?
The Body is a religious coming-of-age story following a group of teenage girls. Netflix teases, “After a dance-team initiation gone wrong, a group of badly behaved Catholic school girls begin having prophetic visions that set off mass hysteria in their town.”

Shephard revealed, “I’ve always been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience. This story is definitely my way of putting a playful spin on all the nightmares of my own teenage-dom. Tonally, I would describe the show as gritty camp. It’s a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dash of Catholic horror.” Describing the series as a love letter to all the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers, she teased that the show draws inspiration from Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and even Mean Girls.
She added, “I was also a teen with an embarrassingly intense fixation on The Crucible and the Salem witch trials. It’s been very interesting to revisit that with the shading of our current political climate!”

Is The Body a queer romance?
The trailer doesn’t dive too much into the romance of the series. However, Shephard has made it clear that The Body was based on her own coming out journey. “I started writing the show the year I came out,” she told Netflix. “All the confusion, shame, passion, spirituality, and the language of girlhood [were things] I was still learning to speak. It felt really heavy to me.”
