‘Black Dagger Brotherhood’ Bosses on Zsadist & Bella’s Intense First Scene Together
What To Know
- Season 2 of Passionflix’s The Black Dagger Brotherhood focuses on Rhage and Mary while giving us tidbits of Bella and Zsadist.
- Bella meets Zsadist at the Brotherhood’s mansion in a tense, threatening encounter that ends the season premiere.
- Director Tosca Musk and author J.R. Ward break down the scene.
While vampire Rhage (Alexander Cubis) and human cancer survivor Mary’s (Audrey Hare) love story takes center stage in Passionflix’s The Black Dagger Brotherhood Season 2, Bella (Mariah Davis) and Zsadist (Andrew Biernat), the primary couple of author J.R. Ward’s Lover Awakened, get a major moment in the premiere episode.
Though their romance will play out in the already-confirmed third season, following the order of Ward’s book series, Bella and Zsadist’s first encounter in Season 2 is far from a meet-cute. Ward and executive producer/director Tosca Musk spoke to Swooon about the decision to end Season 2’s premiere episode with Bella and Z’s tense confrontation.
In Season 2, Bella is introduced as Mary’s close friend and neighbor, though she keeps her vampire nature hidden at first. When the two of them cross paths with mute, pre-transition vampire John Matthew (Bobby Hogan), Bella takes both him and Mary, who knows sign language, to the Brotherhood’s mansion. While Mary and Rhage have their own steamy interaction, so do Z and Bella, though it has a more dangerous edge.

It tracks for Z. He’s the most fearsome Brother, but as a former blood slave, the most scarred. “When it comes to episodic television, you want to end with a little bit of a hook, and in that sort of situation where you have a character who — we, as readers, know who he is, but maybe some people don’t, but the character who is considered to be dangerous and scary, and all these things come up and and almost threaten her, that’s a great way to end a show,” Musk explained. “Then you’re like, ‘Oh, what’s going to happen?'”

Ward explained that Bella and Z’s encounter is one of the “seminal scenes” that readers really wanted to see on screen. “I think it was so perfectly done,” she gushed. In the scene, Bella stumbles across Z in the training room. As he stalks toward her with his blade in his hand, Bella can’t escape. She says she’s sorry before Z cages her against the wall. “I bet you are,” he taunts.
When it came to finding the perfect Bella, the The Black Dagger Brotherhood bosses agreed that Davis is a rockstar. “She is, and so beautiful. Like break-your-camera beautiful,” Ward added. “Not that they aren’t all beautiful, but she’s just amazing.”
