After six years of dating, Gia Giudice and her boyfriend, Christian Carmichael, are moving in together. The Next Gen NYC star moved into her own place in Jersey City, New Jersey, last year, and Carmichael is now joining her in the corner apartment.

“I came to the realization that I wanted to get my own place last year, and he was very supportive of me finding my own place,” Giudice tells Swooon. “During that time, he wanted to, of course, come and move in with me then, but his work was mainly based closer to where his family’s home was, and it just made more sense for him to stay another year at home. Whereas for me, my life was bringing me closer to the city. And I kind of wanted that year of independence, too, just to find my footing. But we knew after one year of me being in my place that, following that, we would move in together.”

The couple looked for new apartments together in New York City, Hoboken, and Jersey City, but ultimately decided to stay in the place Giudice had already been renting. “I was being particularly picky because I love my apartment, and he really does too,” Giudice admits. “And I understood where he was coming from. He just wanted us to find a place where we could call ours from the start and find that new place together. But life got crazy with his new job, and we had my work schedule, and we just simply had no more time to continue looking because my apartment [building] was like, ‘Gia, you need to resign your lease.'”

Coming to that decision “relieved so much stress” for the Bravo star, who says she and Carmichael are already looking ahead to their next move. “I think within this year we’ll really start just exploring more neighborhoods or places that we would want to live in,” she shares. “And then hopefully by the time the lease is up next year, then maybe we’ll look into buying something or getting an investment property, rather than feeling so constricted with these leasing schedules.”

For now, they’re working on compromising how they’ll split their shared space. “It’s definitely going to be a little bit of an adjustment because I definitely did take over the space with all of my clothing,” Giudice laughs. “But right now I am really clearing out and going through all of my clothes, all of my shoes, and really just trying to free up space because that’s so important.”

Some new additions will be a “bigger couch” and a “huge TV” in the living room “for Sunday football and all the sports games,” Giudice reveals. Carmichael will also have the second bathroom to himself, while Giudice’s glam room is being “divided” between them.

“He’s getting one of those built out closets in the glam room,” she spills. “I don’t think he’s thrilled with the space that I’m giving him. It’s not that big, but we’re going to make it work.” Giudice adds that she did a “good job of keeping the apartment very neutral and modern,” so it works for the both of them.

As for what makes their romance work after six years together, Giudice says “communication is key,” noting that the two “understand” each other’s boundaries and respect each other, as well. “Through communication, that obviously builds trust, and that’s something that Christian and I have really prioritized over the years, is just always communicating with one another and just making one another feel the most secure and comfortable within the relationship,” she admits. “That’s really what we’ve leaned in on.”
