‘The Rookie: North’: Jay Ellis Teases ‘Unexpected’ Romance for Alex

In getting to know new characters on TV, we of course want to know about their love lives. And so when the cast of The Rookie (Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Shawn Ashmore, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine), the lead of the new spinoff The Rookie: North, Jay Ellis, and the showrunner of both, Alexi Hawley, stopped by TV Insider and Swooon’s New York Comic Con studio, we had to find out what’s in store for Alex on the ABC midseason series. (Both premiere on Wednesday, January 6, 2027.)
“There’s a little romance for Alex,” Ellis tells us of his character in the video below. “I think it’s unexpected, and it comes in a place where maybe it shouldn’t, but… forbidden fruit.”
At that, O’Neil interjects, “You’re supposed to stay away from the perps.”
Ellis continues, “Yeah, he’s going to go on a bit of a journey and it might put him at odds with some people, but we’ll see how it goes.”

So far, we know that Alex “forms a connection” with Andy Allo‘s Brooke, described as “a warm, smart, attractive, and effortlessly charming first-year ER resident who is still adjusting to the pressures of the job.” She “handles it all with humor, empathy, and confidence.”
The Rookie: North premieres Wednesday, January 6, 2027, at 10/9c. It follows Ellis’ Alex Holland, who battles a lifetime of failed commitments by joining the Pierce County Police Department as a rookie following a violent home invasion. “Policing from the urban coast to the rural forest where backup isn’t just five minutes away, Alex must prove to his skeptical training officer, his fellow rookies and himself that he’s finally found something worthy of the fight,” the description teases.
In addition to Ellis, the series stars Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson.
Joining Hawley as executive producers are Nathan Fillion, Mark Gordon, Bill Norcross, Michelle Chapman, Brett Mahoney, and Mary Leah Sutton. Jay Ellis is a producer.
