Though Passionflix subscribers await the telling of Rhage and Mary’s love story in The Black Dagger Brotherhood TV series, they’ve been beloved by readers of J.R. Ward’s Lover Eternal for 20 years. It’s a fact the actors bringing them to life, Alexander Cubis and Audrey Hare, are well aware of ahead of the Season 2 premiere.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood Season 2 will put Mary, a human, in the orbit of vampire warrior Rhage. They’re instantly drawn to each other, falling hard and fast, but multiple obstacles — being different species, Rhage’s uncontrollable curse that turns him into a beast, Mary’s recently returned leukemia, and the villainous lessers — challenge them over the course of the 2006 novel, which is the second in Ward’s long-running book series.

“I think Lover Eternal has a lot of heart to it and vulnerability,” Hare told Swooon in a joint interview with her costar at New York Comic Con. “I think fans particularly connect with Mary in many different ways, and I think they can put themselves in the place of Mary in a way, and I was able to when I was reading the book. And luckily, I got to play this character now, but I think that’s why they connect to it.”

Cubis, who shared that he’s read his character’s book multiple times, thinks Rhage and Mary’s story resonates with fans because people “really relate to wanting to find a partner that accepts you for your whole self, including whatever you might be hiding from the rest of the world or the battles or the demons that you might be dealing with.”

The actor added that the adaptation has that theme in common with the book, which sees Mary love Rhage even when he reveals vampiric nature and his curse to her. He explained, “It’s really rare to find that person and people, I think, want that in their own lives, and J.R. and Tosca [Musk] have created a world and a relationship that showcases that with sincerity and with heart.
