John Wilson covertly films the lives of his fellow New Yorkers while attempting to give everyday advice such as “How to Split the Check,” “How to Put Up Scaffolding,” or  “How to Cover Your Furniture.”

This self-described “anxious New Yorker” brings his personal outlook, with his own wry commentary, to HBO in the docu-comedy series How To with John Wilson, debuting Friday, October 23.

As writer, director, cameraman, executive producer and narrator, Wilson previously has said that he “decided to strip away as much bullshit as possible by making everything by myself. I liked the idea of treating films like essays; executing quick, simple ideas without the restrictions of a typical film production.”

So the episodes take wildly unexpected turns.

In the series opener, “How to Make Small Talk,” Wilson’s refreshing honesty is in conflict with the delicate balancing act of making – and safely redirecting – casual conversation. Just what are the risks of small talk?
