9 Characters Who'd Better Return to 'Grey's Anatomy' Before the End

There’s no replacing Richard (James Pickens Jr.) as the father figure in Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) life, but we would like to check in with Mer’s biological dad, Thatcher (Jeff Perry), who hasn’t been seen since he had a kidney stone removed in Season 7. Is he sober these days? Has he overcome the shock of losing Lexie? Is he still dating that 20-something woman?

Dr. Preston Burke
Sure, Burke got closure with Cristina in Season 10 — as actor Isaiah Washington reprised his role to help Sandra Oh close out hers — but are we really to believe Burke put down the scalpel for good, even for la dolce vita
with his wife and kids in Milan? Are we sure he’s not gunning for the next Catherine Fox Award?
Dr. Stephanie Edwards
Similarly, Stephanie was probably the best of her intern class, so it’s hard to fathom her staying out of the OR for long… even if he medical career literally ended with a bang in Season 13. (Jerrika Hinton, sorry HBO canceled Here & Now
, but you’re always welcome back at Grey’s

Dr. Erica Hahn
At least Burke and Stephanie got graceful exits. No such grace was afforded to this cardio surgeon, who walked out into the parking lot and never came back — apparently frustrated by the complexities of Richard’s morality and Callie’s sexuality.
Rumor has it actress Brooke Smith was fired from the show because ABC execs were trying to “pray away the gay,” so to speak. Brooke Smith deserves better.
Dr. Addison Shepherd
OK, yes, Addison (Kate Walsh) had a whole spin-off devoted to her, and Private Practice
gave her a happy ending tied up with a neat little bow. But still, she has plenty of reasons to pay Grey Sloan another visit, not the least of which is her former Oceanside Wellness coworker Amelia Shepherd (Amelia Scorsone).
Dr. April Kepner
Even though she left her job at Grey Sloan at the end of Season 14, April (Sarah Drew) is still in Seattle, working with the Emerald City’s homeless populations and settling into married life with fiancé-turned-ex-turned-husband Matthew Taylor (Justin Bruening). And we have to imagine Jackson (Jesse Williams) won’t be raising their daughter alone, so we oughta see April on-screen at least one more time.
Dr. Arizona Robbins
Season 14’s other departure, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is headed to New York City to start a women’s health practice with mentor Nicole Herman (Geena Davis) — and, more importantly, to be in the same city as baby-mama Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez). We wish her well, but we’d be sorry if she never again rode her skate shoes into the hospital’s peds ward. And hopefully, she’ll be accompanied by…

Dr. Callie Torres
If Callie and Arizona’s text messages are any indication, these ex-wives are on the path to romantic reconciliation. Hooray! But words are cheap — shippers should be able to witness Calzona’s happily-ever-after!
When she left Grey’s
at the end of Season 12, Sara Ramirez told Twitter followers she’d be “taking some welcome time off” from the show. We’re hoping that it’s not a permanent vacation.

Grey’s Anatomy is still commanding impressive ratings even as it heads into its 15th season, but mounting evidence suggests the ABC medical drama is only a season or two away from its grand finale.
Still, the producers have plenty of time to bring back some of the long-running show’s most engaging characters, as they did with Teddy Altman. For obvious reasons, they can’t bring back characters like Derek (Patrick Dempsey) or Lexie (Chyler Leigh), but there are plenty of others they could.

The show’s 300th episode was loaded with nostalgia, but really, the entire 14th season was.
