NBC Addresses Jimmy Fallon’s Accidents; Signs New Deal with Seth Meyers
Seth Meyers is staying put on NBC’s Late Night through February 2021.
The host, who took over Late Night in 2014, will also bring the show to Washington, D.C. later this year.
“We love Seth so much,” NBC Entertainment chairman says of Meyers, who transitioned to Late Night with Seth Meyers from Saturday Night Live. “His knowledge of both current events and pop culture is unparalleled and he brings that expertise to ‘Late Night’ every night. The show couldn’t be in better hands.”
“I can’t thank NBC enough for continuing to support our show and this more than makes up for my disappointment in not getting cast in The Wiz,” said Meyers.
“As a writer, performer and host, Seth has a rich history at NBC and we are thrilled that he’ll be at the helm of ‘Late Night’ for many more years,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. “His knowledge of both current events and pop culture is unparalleled and he brings that expertise to Late Night every night. The show couldn’t be in better hands.”
Meyers will also host a 2016 New Year’s Eve Late Night 10/9c primetime special.
Meanwhile, Greenblatt announced that The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon will return to Los Angeles for another batch of shows from Feb. 15 through 19, broadcasting from the Universal Studios lot.
Guests confirmed already include Will Ferrell, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera and Zach Galifianakis.
The network will also air a two-hour Fallon anniversary special on Sunday, Feb. 14. The Tonight Show Valentine’s Day Anniversary Special will feature Fallon moments, such as celebrity interviews, musical impressions and comedy sketches.
Greenblatt brushed off a question about whether the Meyers deal was Tonight Show insurance given Fallon’s recent physical accidents, noting that Fallon will likely continue as host long after he’s no longer at NBC.
“He’s great and he doesn’t have a drinking problem that any of us know about,” Greenblatt said. “He goes out and has fun. He’s had some accidents. Aside from that he’s in better shape than he’s ever been. We are always worried about his safety and health, there have been conversations (with him) about that. But the stories are exaggerated.”
