Granchester Finale

Grantchester, “Episode 6” (Sunday, Feb. 22, 10/9c, PBS)

Three things will hit you while watching this British detective series’ alternately sad, funny, and heartwarming finale. First is how screwed you’d be if you were shot in the gut while canvassing a closed rope factory on the outskirts of Cambridge in the 1950s—that’s what happens to vicar-cum-sleuth Sidney Chambers’ (James Norton) cop friend, Geordie (Robson Green), at the episode’s start. Oh, for a cellphone! And, for that matter, modern medicine!

Second, is how hilarious Sidney’s curate, Leonard (Al Weaver), and housekeeper, Mrs. Maguire (Tessa Peake-Jones), are when they pretend to be mother and son to help their boss catch Geordie’s assailant. That pair should lie more often. And third, is how Grantchester is so pleasingly warm and reassuring—despite all the killing. How could you not want to hang out at the manse with Sidney, Leonard, and co. again next year? Just keep away from that rope factory.
