‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Premiere: The 11 Big Answers We Got, and the 9 Questions We Still Have

CHLOE BENNET, LUKE MITCHELL, HENRY SIMMONS - Agents of SHIELD

Spoiler alert! Do not read further if you haven’t watched the Season 3 premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The third season of S.H.I.E.L.D. came back with a bang—quite literally—with some new and old Inhumans doing battle, and plenty of questions answered from the Season 2 finale. Here are the 11 biggest questions that tonight’s episode answered, in no particular order, plus a few questions that we still have.

Juan Pablo Raba as Joey Gutierrez - Marvel's Agents of SHIELD

Joey, the new Inhuman

1- Did the fish oil create some Inhumans? From what we saw in the first five minutes, it’s pretty clear the bottles of Terrigen crystal-infused fish oil definitely “birthed” some new Inhumans, like Joey, who can melt metal. But exactly how many Inhumans is TBD…though the map that revealed the possible extent of the Terrigen spread (at the end of the ep) was quite scary.

2- Were the bottles of fish oil recalled? Hard to say if the Food and Drug Administration got involved, but Bobbi said all the bottles were pulled off shelves, though purchased ones can’t all be tracked. While the fish oil isn’t deadly for humans, it is “game changing” for Inhumans. (A total understatement.)

3- Has Skye really accepted her Inhuman-ness? Skye has totally embraced her powers and is using them to help track down other Inhumans as part of a special task force (known as the Secret Warriors in the comic books). Just…don’t call her Skye anymore. She’s calling herself Daisy.

4- Wait, is Skye really called Daisy now? Yep. A new identity as an Inhuman means a new-old name, the one she was born with. And it totally makes sense, now that she’s lost both her mom and dad. Oh, and Coulson has trouble with saying Skye “Daisy” also.

5- Did Coulson replace his chopped-off hand with a new one? Three, in fact. But nothing felt “normal,” piled on top of getting used to Skye Daisy.

6- When Bobbi said, “I can’t do this anymore,” what did she mean? Don’t worry, Bobbi’s not leaving anytime soon. For now, she’s the new Simmons and stuck in the labs analyzing Inhumans. As Coulson pointed out, her biology degree sure got put to good use. What she really meant: she no longer wanted back-and-forth drama with Hunter. Which means…they might be getting back together (and possibly remarried).

7- Where’s Ward and HYDRA? Surprisingly, HYDRA has been keeping a low profile. So…stay tuned. We’re sure Ward’s just biding his time.

8- Where did May go on vacation? Let’s hope it wasn’t Tahiti. Sadly, The Calvary was not seen in this episode. And all we know is that she went on vacation and never came back…so Coulson lost a real hand (literally) and his right hand (figuratively).

9- Is Lincoln now with S.H.I.E.L.D.? After being betrayed by Jiaying last season, Lincoln’s quite glass-half-empty. He now sees his Inhuman-ness as a curse, and he’s trying to live a normal life as a…doctor. Ironically, it’s Skye Daisy who’s now trying to convince him to see his powers as a gift.

10- How far will Fitz go to find Simmons? As far as Tangier, Morocco. After theorizing that Simmons was either trapped in the Monolith (the Kree stone that kept liquefying/solidifying) or Ant-Woman, Fitz finally tracked down a scroll that might hold a clue to the stone…and the clue turned out to be the Hebrew word for “death.”

11- What happened to Simmons?! The good news: Simmons is alive! The bad news: She’s trapped in a strange world (possibly Kree in nature?) that’s definitely not of this earth.

And, some other questions we still have after the first episode:

1- How much fish oil do you really need to take to become an Inhuman?

2- Is the Advanced Threat Containment Unit (ATCU) now the new S.H.I.E.L.D. and Rosalind Price the new Coulson?

3- Why is Lash (the new porcupine-y big bad) hunting down Inhumans? (For comic book fans who know the answer, the better question may be: How is Lash judging other Inhumans?)

4- Is Joey going to stay locked up forever under observation?

5- Will we learn where May went and why she didn’t return right away?

6- Why is the Hebrew word for “death” written on the scroll?

7- Did Fitz build all of Coulson’s many, many hands? (And when did he learn to speak/read Arabic and Hebrew?)

8- When Fitz finds Simmons (and you know he will), will they finally go on that dinner date?

9- Seriously, where in the universe is Simmons?!
