Colin Hanks, Dianne Wiest and James Brolin on the “Short” Stories of ‘Life in Pieces’ (VIDEO)
Here’s the long and Short of the matter in the new sitcom, Life in Pieces: each episode of the CBS series will follow one big multigenerational family (the Shorts) and track different storylines (“Short” stories) in each episode.
The four couples that form the core cast recently sat down to share how their characters’ stories will be chronicled thoughout the season. For Colin Hanks and Zoe Lister-Jones, who play husband-and-wife Greg and Jen Short, their story will begin with a birth—and track their journey as parents of newborns, or as “new-born parents,” joked Lister-Jones.

Meanwhile, Thomas Sadoski, who plays Matt Short—the only single member of the family—will ask his boss, Colleen (played by Angelique Cabral), out on a first date. As for the family’s patriarch and matriach, John and Joan (Dianne Wiest and James Brolin, respectively), their tale begins with falling in love—“and fornicating!” Brolin interrupted giddily.
Last but not least, Tim (Dan Bakkedahl), who has three kids with wife Heather (Betsy Brandt) shared the couple are “fairly average, middle-aged.” And like a real married couple, the actors bickered good-naturedly about Brandt’s use of “average” and “middle-aged.”
