Let’s put it this way: Chastain Park Memorial Hospital—the institution at the heart of Fox’s freshman drama The Resident—wouldn’t exactly be our top choice for medical care. The place is positively rife with corruption, including a chief of surgery who operates despite secret hand tremors and an oncologist who’s been swindling her patients. But hey, at least they have ethical head nurse Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) to be the calm at the eye of this storm.
On tonight’s tense episode, she and on-off flame Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) will challenge the higher-ups once again by treating a homeless Jane Doe. Here, VanCamp offers her prognosis.
Chastain is a pretty hostile work environment. How does Nic keep her cool?
People who actually have a lot of power within themselves don’t need to show it. She knows what she’s doing and she’s incredibly skilled, so she’s able to keep it together when others are losing it.

That was part of the appeal. Playing a borderline sociopath was one of my favorite experiences, but it also took a toll. With Nic, I get to tap into more of my true self. Her maternal side spoke to the stage of life I’m in now. [VanCamp is engaged to former costar Josh Bowman.] I’ve been thinking about having children, and when I read this, it made sense to me.
Nic’s caught in a love triangle with Conrad and another doc, Jude (Warren Christie). Which team are you on?
The wiser choice is obviously Jude, but she has all that history with Conrad. Nic feels like she’s never going to be able to get what she needs from Conrad, and yet they love each other. I always root for love!
