Vanderpump Rules Star Jax Taylor on Why His Arrest Was 'Humbling'
So far, season four of Vanderpump Rules has been pretty low-key for its lovable lothario, Jax Taylor. He's been downright well-behaved—if you set aside last week's episode, when he got hammered in the middle of his bartending shift. But lucky for us, all good things must come to an end. Tonight, things will heat up at Sur when Taylor has a big blow-up with James Kennedy. So we caught up with Taylor to figure out what's going down in the episode, airing at 9/8c on Bravo.
How do you feel this season is going for you?
It’s still new for me. My shenanigans don’t really kick off until [tonight's] episode, so it’s okay so far. Last weekend’s episode was a little rough for me. I was really intoxicated. It looked really bad—worse than it was. But it was also extremely hot. It was gay pride weekend. It’s always a s--t show. You just kind of have to go for it. Everybody has drinks and has fun, even the staff. So I probably drank a little bit more than I should have, but it’s kind of like, whatever.
How often do you actually get drunk at work?
I don’t. Very rare. It was just that weekend. That weekend screamed, “Everyone get drunk!”
Did your boss, Lisa Vanderpump, get pissed at you guys?
She definitely doesn’t allow it. It’s one of those things where you just do it and don’t say anything. But I was a little obvious about it.
Did you go home with Lala Kent that night afterwards? It seemed like it.
I left with her, but I didn’t go home with her, no.
You didn’t hook up?
No. Me flirting with her, I would never actually go through with it all the way. I was doing it more to just piss off James because I don’t like James. So anything to ruffle his feathers, it gets me off.
It looks like you’re going to throw down with him on tonight’s episode.
Yeah, you’re going to have to wait and see, but it gets heated. And honestly, it carries on through today.
Where does that stem from?
I just think he’s a young kid that runs his mouth and doesn’t know when to quit. This show, we’ve been a group of friends for a very long time. He’s very new to the show. He kind of just piggybacked off of all of us. He’s coming in, running his mouth, saying, “I’m this and this and this.” He just needs to be stepped down a notch.
Kristen Doute has said she thinks he dated her just to get on the show. Do you agree?
Do Kristen and James belong together?
No. God, no. She’s happy, she’s in a new relationship. She’s doing really well.
Are you friends with Kristen again now?
Yeah. Everyone’s doing pretty well right now.
Except for James.
Um, yeah. I mean, I don’t really consider James one of the original crew. He’s not in our group. Obviously he’s on the show, but he’s not in our group.
Is he a good DJ?
I mean, if you can call pushing play on a computer a DJ, I could do that, too.
What’s up with this girl Lauren who bit up James’ arm and back? Are you guys friends with her?
I’ve honestly talked to her maybe two times. Again, these new people, I stay away from them. I don’t associate with them. They’re a lot younger than I am. Lala, James, Lauren… that’s their own little thing. I don’t know what’s going on really, to be honest, nor do I really care. I’d rather watch grass grow.
How is your sweater line these days?
That’s kind of taking a back burner. I started something else. I invested in a restaurant which is kind of taking all my time now.
How does investing in a restaurant work when you’re a bartender somewhere else?
Well, I’m investing with partners. So friends of mine, we’ve all worked in the restaurant industry, we all put our money together and bought a restaurant.
But you’re still bartending?
Why wouldn’t you bartend at your own restaurant then?
I don’t want to bartend at my own place!
I guess you have to walk in there in a suit.
Yeah, it’s a little different. It’s just trying to make the next step in my career. I don’t want to be a bartender forever, and I’ve been saving up for a long time with my buddies. It’s an Italian restaurant/lounge. I want to say it’s like Pump—it looks like Pump—but with TVs. So it’s got a little bit more of a sports edge to it, but it’s absolutely beautiful.
What does Lisa think about it?
She’s happy. Obviously, we’re not there to be bartenders our whole lives. I don’t want to be 40-years-old, still bartending at Sur.
You had a very public arrest during the filming of this season. Are you nervous about how that's going to play out on the show?
Yes and no. I haven’t seen the episode yet. I made a mistake. I was extremely intoxicated, and I was kind of living this lifestyle where I felt like I was a little bit untouchable at the time and kind of like, “Nobody can tell me what to do. I can do what I want.” It was obviously a bad thing, what I did, and I’d take it back, of course. But it was a very humbling experience. So I needed to be knocked down a little bit. I kind of had this ego. So as far as that, something good came out of it.
Your ex, Stassi Schroeder, is also going to be showing up this season. Are you more or less nervous about that?
I’m not nervous. Actually, we’re starting to talk again.
Yeah, so it’s been good. I’m happy that she’s back. It’s pretty interesting. Katie [Maloney]’s birthday is next month, and we’re all going to this huge cabin in Utah. It’s going to be a little weird because Kristen’s going to be there, Ariana [Madix], Tom [Sandoval], Stassi, myself—all under one roof. That hasn’t happened in five years. So it’s going to be a little intense, but I think we’re all at a stage in our lives where we’ve kind of moved on from all that crap. But yes, I am occasionally texting Stassi here and there.
Not romantically, though?
No, not romantically. I first reached out to her at our premiere party. James showed up and was really intoxicated and was bashing Stassi. Just drunk and obliterated and bashing her: “What the hell are you doing here? You’re not even on the show anymore!” Listen, she started the show. He wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for her. So I took offense to that and the way he was downgrading her. So that’s when I texted her, “Hey, how are you doing?” Yadda yadda yadda.
Are you seeing anyone now?
Yeah, I am dating. I have a girlfriend. She’s very beautiful. She’s actually on the show, Brittany [Cartwright. Note: She’s the one Taylor tried to get a job at Sur earlier this season.] We’ve been dating for eight months. She’s from Kentucky. I met her in Las Vegas. She was coming out and visiting me on the weekends. She didn’t want to live in Kentucky anymore, so she moved out to L.A., moved in with me.
So it’s pretty serious?
Yeah, things have been going really good. She’s met my family. I’m going to meet hers, actually, in another week.
Give me one word to describe the rest of the season.
