On September 11, 2001, filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet were in lower New York filming a documentary on firefighters. Jules was filming at the World Trade Center and captured footage of the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, hitting the North Tower. He filmed the firefighters as they rushed up the stairs of the towers to try and save the occupants, but 343 died instantly when the towers collapsed. The resulting film, 9/11, was aired on CBS in early 2002 and won an Emmy and a Peabody Award.

On the tragedy’s fifteenth anniversary, CNN is presenting the film with updated segments featuring Denis Leary, who’s not only a producer, writer and actor, but the founder of the Leary Firefighters Foundation, which funds fire departments around the country.

He introduces segments with firefighters who survived that day as well as the children of some of New York’s Bravest, who are following in their father’s footsteps. “This is an amazingly powerful and effective historical document,” says Leary, who had seen the first clips with some firefighter friends before it even aired. “I remember watching the film for the first time and being thankful that these filmmakers had been there, so that my kids could see it. It’s the one true living document  that shows exactly what happened that day and who these first responders were.”
