“If a girl has growth and no one’s there to see it, did she really grow at all?”

That’s the rhetorical question Lena Dunham ponders, when asked if the four young women of Girls will mature this year. And Season 5 will open with one of the biggest adult moments on the show: Marnie’s (Allison Williams) marriage to Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Of course, the huge event will force the remaining single ladies to reexamine their lives and identities, though it could be “growth in a terrible direction,” jokes Judd Apatow, who helped Dunham launch the series.

But what if the Girls found themselves paired up with the matured men of Apatow’s cult show, Freaks and Geeks? Lots of drinking and sex would surely be involved, but one thing probably wouldn’t change: Everything would still be “all f–ked up. In a different way,” laughs Apatow.

Watch the video above to hear Dunham and Apatow talk more about how Girls became a voice for a specific generation, like Sex and the City.
