Tonight’s Life in Pieces marks an historic occasion for the Shorts and Hughes clans: the first time young Tyler (Niall Cunningham) brings home a girlfriend. Any living being would’ve been impressive to parents Tim (Dan Bakkedahl) and Heather (Betsy Brandt), but the whole family is gobsmacked when the luminous Clementine (Daytime Emmy winner Hunter King) walks in with the gawky Tyler. “She’s so uncomfortably attractive that it makes the rest of the family very awkward around her,” says creator Justin Adler. Lest you think Adler is overselling the awkward, let the above clip serve as proof.

The episode also features Party Down reunion of sorts, though not onscreen: Ken Marino and Martin Starr both guest star in the episode. Marino is an odious coworker who messes with budding lovers Matt (Thomas Sadoski) and Colleen (Angelique Cabral), and Starr is a pest control guy, though you might have to pause and take a close look to see him under some dirt and prosthetics. “He kind of looks like Fidel Castro,” says Adler. “If Fidel Castro were an animal trapper.” Starr and Marino’s storylines don’t intersect, unfortunately, but we live in hope; plus, a pilot Adler did with Starr also starred Party Down‘s Ryan Hansen.
