Over the last eight weeks, AMC’s Better Call Saul has quickly transformed from a simple Breaking Bad prequel to a powerhouse drama worthy of its own accolades. The acting, writing and directing is every bit as good as Breaking Bad, and Bob Odenkirk adds a new layer of humanity to Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, that we didn’t get to see during the days of Breaking Bad. Tonight, Jimmy’s bond with brother Chuck (the fantastic Michael McKean) is strengthened—and tested—as the two prepare to do legal battle against the Sandpiper Retirement Community for chronically overcharging their residents. The home-bound Chuck, who suffers from electromagnetic hypersensitivity, has been out of the law game for years until last week’s showdown against Sandpiper’s attorneys. Chuck was so enamored in the case that he wandered outside to collect documents from Jimmy’s car without experiencing any physical pain from the world’s electromagnetic fields. Chuck’s condition might be improving, but the true test of strength lies in this case, which might be the breakthrough Jimmy needs to begin his transition from low level elder law representative Jimmy to criminal attorney Saul.
