Daytime Emmy Nominations: Surprises and Shockers and Snubs, Oh My!
They’re doing back flips in Port Charles. The 42nd annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations were announced live on CBS’s The Talk Tuesday, and ABC’s General Hospital topped the list with 28 nominations. GH was followed by CBS’s The Young and the Restless with 25 nods and CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful with 19. All three soaps, along with NBC’s Days of Our Lives, which scored 16 nods, were nominated for Outstanding Daytime Drama. All four serials were also nominated for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Directing.
Notable acting nominations include a career first for Days fan favorite Alison Sweeney (Sami), who is up for Outstanding Lead Actress, along with her Days costar Peggy McCay (Caroline), Y&R‘s Gina Tognoni (Phyllis) and GH‘s Laura Wright (Carly) and Maura West (Ava). Sweeney left the soap last fall after a 22-year run. GH‘s Anthony Geary (Luke), who holds the record for the most acting wins, will compete for his eighth trophy alongside GH‘s Jason Thompson (Patrick, left), Y&R‘s Christian LeBlanc (Michael), and former Y&R star Billy Miller (Billy).
On the talk show front, ABC’s The Chew, Food Network’s The Kitchen and the syndicated programs The Dr. Oz Show and Steve Harvey will compete in the Outstanding Talk Show/Informative category, while CBS’s The Talk is up against three syndicated series, Live! With Kelly and Michael, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and The Wendy Williams Show, for Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment.
Noticeably missing from the latter category is ABC’s troubled talker The View. Whoopi Goldberg and company were also bypassed in the Talk Show/Entertainment host category, where the nods instead went to Live! stars Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan, Wendy Williams, and the five ladies of The Talk: (below, left to right) Sheryl Underwood, , Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, and Julie Chen.
Nominees for Outstanding Morning Program are CBS Sunday Morning, ABC’s Good Morning America and NBC’s Today Show.
The awards will air live on cable channel Pop (formerly TV Guide Network) on Sunday, April 26 (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). Betty White receives the Lifetime Achievement Award.
