What’s Worth Watching: ‘Big Fan’, ‘The Odd Couple’, ‘Beyond’ and more for Monday, January 9

Big Fan (10/9c, ABC): With little of note going up against the big draw of the College Football Playoff National Championship game on ESPN, this harmless trifle of a game show seems the most palatable of the night’s “reality” offerings. Produced by Jimmy Kimmel, and hosted by Andy Richter, Big Fan recruits three super-fans of a celebrity du jour—in the opener, it’s Matthew McConaughey (followed at 10:30/9:30c by Packers QB Aaron Rodgers)—to answer trivia questions even the star sometimes doesn’t know. In the final round, the winner goes head-to-head with the star, and win or lose, everyone gets the sort of selfie any non-self-respecting fan would kill for.

College Football Playoff National Championship (8/7c, ESPN): In a rematch of the 2016 Championship game, the Clemson Tigers face last year’s champ, the Alabama Crimson Tide, in Tampa.

Inside Monday TV: Whenever a network schedules an original episode of anything opposite a major sports event, you’ve got to assume it’s being burned off. So it is with CBS’s lamentable The Odd Couple reboot, which this week welcomes Cougar Town’s Busy Philipps as a party gal Felix (Thomas Lennon) meets and takes home for a one-night stand. … As Freeform’s Beyond (9/8) continues to explore the mystery of what Holden (Burkely Duffield) was up to during his long coma, he learns he may not be up to handling the truth. … Best movie option: Mad Max: Fury Road on HBO (8/7c), a much better vehicle for Tom Hardy than the FX series Taboo that premieres on Tuesday.
