They don’t make ’em like this anymore.

September 25 marks Charles Osgood’s final day as host of CBS Sunday Morning, a 22-year run that has seen the folksy broadcaster bring us the TV equivalent of comfort food: soul-soothing stories on the arts and humanities and real-life portraits of Americana that remind us—despite these profoundly chaotic times—that integrity and ingenuity still rule the land.

Osgood, with his grandfatherly countenance, mellow voice and sporty bow ties, has been the ideal anchor for all this Sunday goodness and we will miss him dearly.

The man’s 83 and has been a CBS News stalwart since 1971, so it’s no surprise he’s chosen to retire from on-air work. And he does plan to stick with The Osgood File, his weekday news segments on the CBS Radio Network. Still, it’s a drag. One can never get too much of a national treasure.

CBS Sunday Morning, Sundays, 9am/8c, CBS.
