What’s Worth Watching: ‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Difficult People’, Sergio Leone Westerns on TCM, ‘Rome’s Buried Secrets’ and more for Tuesday, July 19

Animal Kingdom (9/8c, TNT): The beach house might feel more like Animal House when bad boys Craig (Ben Robson) and Deran (Jake Weary) decide to throw a party while Smurf (Ellen Barkin) is off doing her usual criminal thing. And where’s adopted son Baz (Scott Speedman) to keep the thugs in line? He’s moving forward the timetable on his big con, which is likely to make prodigal grandson J (Finn Cole) even more unhappy. Surf’s up, and so’s the melodrama.

Difficult People (new episodes on Tuesday, Hulu): In one of the funnier episodes to date—and that’s saying something—Billy (Billy Eichner) and Julie (Julie Klausner) find themselves across the river in, gulp, New Jersey. In alien territory, Julie is embraced by Italian gal pals as one of their own (she’s Jewish, but what the diff), and Billy is mistakenly pegged (by Mark Consuelos in an inspired guest casting) as being closeted and in need of (inept) tutoring on the basics of gay culture. Of course the charade will backfire, but it’s fun while it lasts.

Inside Tuesday TV: While the ongoing convention coverage may lead some to wonder what’s happening to modern civilization, Science Channel goes underground in the Eternal City to explore Rome’s Buried Secrets (9/8c), exposing engineering marvels of an ancient society. … Repeat of the night: Part One of The Flash‘s December crossover (8/7c) with Arrow, which also helped set up yet another DC spinoff in Legends of Tomorrow. … Turner Classic Movies’ month-long salute to Westerns (on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through July) pays homage in prime time to the Sergio Leone “spaghetti Westerns” that helped establish Clint Eastwood’s legend: 1964’s A Fistful of Dollars (8/7c), 1965’s For a Few Dollars More (9:45/8:45c) and 1968’s epic The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (midnight/11c).
