‘Game of Thrones’ Leads the 2016 Emmy Nominations

After sustaining its “Is Jon Snow dead?” cliffhanger for months, Game of Thrones’ sixth season led all programs in Emmy nominations with 23 (down just one from last year’s 24 nods; the HBO drama went on to win 12 in 2015). Among the nominations were first-time nods for Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) in their respective supporting categories.

The Americans’ success was arguably the biggest shock of the morning, as the FX drama scored five nominations, including first time nominations for its lead actors, Keri Russell (Elizabeth) and Matthew Rhys (Philip), and the show’s first Outstanding Drama Series nod in its fourth year. Elsewhere on FX, The People V. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story secured 22 nominations, including five in the acting categories.

Also making an impact was USA’s freshman drama Mr. Robot, which nabbed six nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and a lead actor nod for Rami Malek (Elliot). However, Christian Slater (who won a Golden Globe for his supporting role) was snubbed.

Laurie Metcalf was a big winner as well, scoring three separate Emmy nominations: Lead Actress in a Comedy (Getting On); Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series (The Big Bang Theory); and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Horace and Pete).
