In NBC’s new medical drama Chicago Med, Carl Lumbly will be stepping into the role of Bert Goodwin, the husband of Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkeson), the head of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. The married couple’s dynamic will change when the usually-healthy Bert comes down with an illness, which will no doubt affect both their personal and work lives.

Chicago Med is the latest procedural spin-off from the Dick Wolf-produced Chicago shows, which also includes Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Lumbly is best known for his role as Agent Marcus Dixon, alongside Jennifer Garner’s Sydney Bristow, on the ABC espionage drama Alias. Recently, Lumbly had recurring roles on CBS’s Zoo, based on James Patterson’s bestselling novel of the same name, and A&E’s “The Returned.”

Previous casting news include Marlyne Barret of The Wire as Maggie, and Rachel Dipillo from Jane the Virgin as another recurring character.

Chicago Med, premieres Tuesday, Nov. 17, 9/8c, NBC
