The 89th Academy Awards (Sunday, 8:30/7:30c, ABC): Jimmy Kimmel takes on the unenviable task of hosting Hollywood’s splashiest celebration of movies, with less controversy than a year ago, thanks to a more inclusive slate of nominees including Fences and Moonlight, although political soap-boxing seems inevitable, all things considered. Look for an emphasis on music, with La La Land the front-runner for Best Picture, and performances from John Legend, Sting, Justin Timberlake and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.

48 Hours (Saturday, 9/8c, CBS): The true-crime newsmagazine devotes a two-hour special to the subject of being “Stalked,” with NCIS star Pauley Perrette at the forefront of trying to change laws deemed ineffective. Erin Moriarty reports, interviewing several victims not nearly as famous or visible as Perrette.

Big Little Lies (Sunday, 9/8c, HBO): Since the Oscar binge may impede on your regular Sunday viewing, HBO is making its lineup available for an early look On Demand, on HBO GO and HBO NOW as of Friday. In the second episode of the addictive social satire, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) erupts over a snub from snooty Renata (Laura Dern), and as another parent puts it, “Feces is never terribly far from Madeline’s fan.” The most intriguing encounter, though, may be a mano-a-mano meeting between Madeline’s current husband (Adam Scott) and her ex (James Tupper).

Inside Weekend TV: ABC’s Shark Tank (Friday, 9/8c) celebrates a milestone, making a deal that puts the show across the $100 million threshold. A retrospective of the hit reality shows follows on 20/20 (10/9c). … SundanceTV presents the groundbreaking original miniseries Roots in its entirely in daylong marathons Saturday and Sunday (starting at 11 am/10c), with its sequel Roots: The Next Generation to follow on Monday and Tuesday (starting at 5 pm/4c). … Science Channel’s Mythbusters: The Search goes live (Saturday, 9/8c) to reveal who will carry the franchise on to a new generation of myth-busting.
